about

Music by Yoni Avi Battat
Text from Psalm 98
Featuring Dena El Saffar (joza), Jesse Chevan (darbuka), and Fabio Pirozzolo (riq)

Playing musical instruments has always been an important part of my spiritual expression, as it was for Jews of ancient times. Psalm 98 references the instrument kinor, which means violin in modern Hebrew. Historians believe it may have been something closer to a lyre or harp. I like to think that the kinor was some sort of ancient violin, like the Iraqi coconut-shell spike fiddle, or joza, featured in this track.

lyrics

זַמְּרוּ‭ ‬לַיְיָ‭ ‬בְּכִנּוֹר‭ ‬בְּכִנּוֹר‭ ‬וְקוֹל‭ ‬זִמְרָה
Praise God with a kinor and the voice of song
